DIAMOND IN-HOUSE CERTIFICATE

A diamond certificate or grading report, is an official document created by a professional gemologist, trained and qualified in the field of diamonds. Each diamond is evaluated, measured and scrutinized using a 10x jeweler's loupe, 40x microscope, white light, a fixed set of base color stones and other industry tools. Diamonds are graded as loose diamonds for accuracy and a detailed certificate includes details of the carat weight, cut, clarity, color (4Cs), dimensions, polish, symmetry and fluorescence.

There are no laws that regulate how diamonds are graded. There are differences among different grading companies and organizations. Some of the most respected labs :

GIA-Gemological Institute of America

The GIA Lab is the most common and sets the industry standard for COLOR and CLARITY grading.

AGS - American Gem Society

The AGS Laboratories has been providing high quality diamond grading reports since 1996. AGS were the first diamond laboratory to offer a diamond cut grade based on proven science and the first laboratory to offer cut grading for fancy shapes including princess, emerald and oval cut diamonds.

EGL-European Gemological Laboratory

EGL is one of the world's premier gemological laboratories. For over 25 years it has offered the fine jewelry trade and consumers accurate, reliable gemstone identification and profesional certification to validate their gemstone purchase.

Beside Independent Diamond Certificate, there is also an appraisal document, that intended to provide an estimate of specifications of the piece of jewelry in question as well as an estimated retail replacement value, should the piece be lost or stolen. Appraisals will usually come with a disclaimer stating clearly that the grading was performed under the limitations of stting and is simply and estimation. An appraisal places a monetary value on a diamond, but does not certify the quality of the diamond.

A Certificate is different from Appraisal. a Certificate is the blueprint of the diamond. A Certificate describes the quality of a diamond, but it does not place a monetary value on the gem. It tells us the diamond's exact measurements and weight, as well as the details of its cut and quality. It precisely points out all the individual characteristic of the stone. Certificates also serve as proof of the diamond's identity and value.

A real independent certificate will state all of carat weight, cut, color, clarity, a diagram of the stone with position of every inclusion, diamond proportions, symmetry and fluorescence grades, whereas most in-house appraisals and certificate issued by "GIA trained gemologist" that may be affiliated by the seller only state the carat weight, cut, color and clarity of the stone without giving the details.

It is usually that Independent Diamond Certificate is not provided for diamond purchased with less than 1,0 carat, but the diamond producer still provide buyer with in-house documents.
